David Elleray

After Dinner Speaker, Football Referee

Until his retirement in 2003, David Elleray was for many years Britain's highest profile and most highly regarded FIFA and Premiership referee.

David has many hilarious and entertaining anecdotes from a career in football that spanned thirty years and included no less than 2,415 matches. His perspective on his life as the 'man in the middle' is fascinating and it will have a broad appeal way beyond that of the sports enthusiast. David speaks with great wit, refreshing candour and eloquent style about his life at the heart of the game.

David's interest in refereeing began early – at thirteen, he was officiating at his first match. David progressed through amateur and semi-professional leagues to become a Football League referee in 1986. Since then, David has worked with many famous players and managers and he has witnessed some extraordinary goals. He was just feet away from David Beckham the day he scored from within his own half, and he vividly remembers the thrill of running alongside Ryan Giggs as he scored his amazing goal in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final replay against Arsenal.

David refereed a major Cup Final on four continents in a career that took him to games all over the world including Japan, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.

Career highlights include refereeing the FA Cup Final at Wembley (1994); South Africa v Brazil at Nelson Mandela's Inauguration Trophy in Johannesburg (1996); Euro '96 Finals; Germany v Brazil (1998); Brazilian Cup Final (1998) and the Worthington Cup Final (2000) at the Millennium Stadium.

David is able to tailor his after-dinner talks with ease. As well as such career highlights, David is also able to speak of the tremendous on and off-field pressures modern referees are placed under and the abuse and threats that they have to cope with too.

He shares his insights on the pressures of decision-making, his strategies to manage players on the pitch and how important it is to ensure that assistant referees feel part of a team. He describes what it's like to referee players such as David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Alan Shearer, Ian Wright, Vinnie Jones and Wayne Rooney.
