Broadcaster, Radio Host and After Dinner Speaker
In a broadcasting career lasting more than 40 years, Peter Slater has been assaulted by a World Motor Racing Champion, had a confrontation with a drunken Brian Clough, interviewed the most famous man in the world, and convinced listeners that an air conditioning unit sounded like a helicopter.
He's been thrown off the Wembley pitch in the middle of a live broadcast, and spoken on national radio after consuming one too many bottles of wine. He's suffered the wrath of Sir Alex Ferguson and impersonated a chicken to a waitress in darkest Poland after boarding the wrong train en route to a Chris Hoy interview.
Peter spent the first ten years of his career in local commercial radio, first in the North-East, then in Suffolk, where he reported on Ipswich Town. He joined the BBC Radio Sports Department in 1985, and at various times has been the networks Football Producer, Formula One Pit Lane Reporter and Tour De France Commentator.
He left the BBC in 2012, but continues to cover Premier League and Championship matches for Radio 5Live and Final Score on BBC TV.
His recently published book, "Don't You Know Who I Am" ( 35 years being ignored by sports rich and famous) details much of what has been a varied and rewarding career.
His talks about his experiences are always well received and have generally provided an informative and, most importantly, entertaining time for the audience.
